Charles Debattista

Charles Debattista practises as a barrister and arbitrator and is joint head of 36 Stone, which deals with disputes arising in shipping, commodities and international arbitration. He spent many years as a GAFTA arbitrator and was particularly sought after a trade representative before GAFTA Boards of Appeal before moving to full time practice at the Bar. He still sits regularly as an Arbitrator under the rules of the LMAA, ICC, LCIA, SCMA, and the Swiss Chamber of Arbitration. His practice as a barrister includes disputes relating to the application of the Arbitration Act 1996. Widely published, his latest work is Debattista on Bills of Lading in Commodity Trade (4th ed 2021). Charles has also been closely associated with many of the main legal instruments used in shipping and trade law, spanning from COGSA 1992 to Incoterms 2020.
